What the data contains
CDC's National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) counts deaths from death certificates reported through the National Vital Statistics System and publishes provisional weekly counts on data.cdc.gov every week. Counts for recent weeks are incomplete because certificates take weeks to arrive and be coded, so they rise in later releases. This source reads the national rows (United States) of the dataset Provisional COVID-19 Death Counts by Week Ending Date and State for the last 52 weeks on each daily run and makes one record per week keyed by the week ending date: deaths from all causes, deaths involving COVID-19, influenza and pneumonia (and their combinations), all-cause deaths as a percentage of the expected number, MMWR year and week, and the extract date. Counts are national aggregates with no person-level data. A monitor reports each new week and each revision as late certificates arrive. SourceFinch is independent of CDC.
Fields and types
Every record has these fields. The key field week identifies a record across runs, so changes are reported field by field.
| Field | Type | Description |

weekkey | date | Week ending date (Saturday) of the MMWR week (YYYY-MM-DD). The record key. |
mmwr_year | integer, nullable | MMWR year of the week. |
mmwr_week | integer, nullable | MMWR week number (1 to 53). |
total_deaths | integer, nullable | Deaths from all causes in the week, provisional. |
covid_19_deaths | integer, nullable | Deaths involving COVID-19 (ICD-10 U07.1), provisional. |
influenza_deaths | integer, nullable | Deaths involving influenza (ICD-10 J09-J11), provisional. |
pneumonia_deaths | integer, nullable | Deaths involving pneumonia (ICD-10 J12-J18), provisional. |
pneumonia_and_covid_19_deaths | integer, nullable | Deaths involving both pneumonia and COVID-19, provisional. |
pneumonia_influenza_or_covid_19_deaths | integer, nullable | Deaths involving pneumonia, influenza or COVID-19, provisional. |
percent_of_expected_deaths | number, nullable | All-cause deaths as a percentage of the expected number for the week, based on earlier years; low for recent weeks while death certificates are still arriving. |
data_as_of | date, nullable | Date of the NCHS data extract the counts come from (YYYY-MM-DD). |

]Evidence behind every value
- Each run keeps the publisher's exact response, hashed with SHA-256. This sample came from a response with hash
8c12f87f91ac1d449a09471d22b2f30b0935fab69a1f4f47ee5f590a6ae02931. - Every value records where it came from in that response: a JSON Pointer into the retained capture.
- Each run gets a signed manifest (Ed25519) timestamped by an RFC 3161 authority: this run's manifest hash is
79f9fd9782cd71949ff1db3540eeca34ba8d9e41c23203dc36936510e90cdf47, timestamped October 13, 2026. - The compliance state at capture is recorded with the evidence: robots.txt hash and verdict, AI-preference signals, crawler identity and the usage rights below.
- Download any run as an evidence bundle (WACZ) and check it offline, without trusting SourceFinch:

CDC's use of agency materials page states that most information on CDC websites is in the public domain and may be freely used or reproduced without permission, provided users attribute it to CDC, carry a disclaimer that their use does not imply endorsement by CDC, HHS or the U.S. Government, do not change the substantive content and state that the material is otherwise available on the agency website at no charge. The dataset's metadata on data.cdc.gov states the licence Public Domain U.S. Government. data.cdc.gov's robots.txt (Socrata) allows the /resource/ API path with a one-second crawl delay; the SODA API is keyless for light use and this source makes one request per daily run. Records are national aggregates with no person-level data.
